ALTOONA WORKS MONTHLY REPORT: Capital Equipment Programs
From this document it appears that Altoona was on a major car building program with information herein starting a couple of years prior to the report date. What is interesting to your archivist is the variety and quantity of cars produced under the program, 1300 boxcars as well as a "Diner, Single Unit, SS", a "Office Supply Recreation" car and two "Tower Cars". Lots of info on car costs, etc.

FINANCIAL
PC Annual Report 1967
PC Annual Report 1968
The theme of the '67 and '68 Reports was to use what appear to be HO models throughout to describe the different corporate activities. Economical and a chuckle for a model railroader to behold.
PC Annual Report 1969
By 1969 the PC Annual Report reveals that things have gotten grim. Now entirely printed in black and white, profits for the year crashed to $4mil from $88mil; even worse, there were additional charges of $126mil resulting from losses on PC's investment in long haul passenger facilities. Ouch.
P&LE Bond Exchange Offer Document 1968
In early 1968 PC added ownership of another slice of PLE by offering stock, bonds and cash for some of the PLE shares. Some good statistics from the period, such as commodities hauled by PC as measured by rates and tonnage; also a good system map and PLE map.

CORPORATE HISTORY
MAGNUSON REPORT
On December 1972, a report entitled "The Penn Central and Other Railroads: A Report to the Senate Committee on Commerce" (Warren G. Magnuson, Chairman) was prepared, it is enormous and provided here in four large sections (of which parts 1 and 2, and the Appendix, are consequently very large computer files). The purpose was, as stated in the introduction:

The Senate Committee on Commerce in 1971 directed that a special staff under direction of the Committee's Transportation Counsel be formed to review the Penn Central Transportation Company. The study was to determine the reasons for the Penn Central's collapse into bankruptcy in June 1970. Further it was to explore the extent to which the malady which affected the Penn Central exists in the remainder of the rail industry. Pursuant to the Committee's direction a special staff was assembled after the special authorizing legislation, S. Res. 81, passed the Senate on May 3, 1971. The attached report, the result of the efforts by the staff, should provide the Committee with some useful information which can be applied in future Committee deliberations on related matters.

Maybe there is value in the Magnuson Report for the railfan and modeler, because a lot of stuff is deeply buried inside there (traffic information and maps and things); maybe it's just an albatross. Still, we are pleased to have it available here, and we hope someone finds it useful. The computer whirred for hours conducting text recognition, so with good luck you may even find keywords can be searched from within...
